Glasgow’s gay village is a compact area in the Merchant City part of town, in the south-east part of the city centre. It has a friendly, fun loving atmosphere, as can be witnessed by the many bars holding quiz, comedy, karaoke and cabaret nights, then letting their hair down at the weekends for some serious dancing, much of it to the cheesiest of pop.
Merchant City was home to wealthy city merchants in the 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly the Tobacco Lords from whom many of the streets take their name. Now it has high end boutique shops and some of Glasgow’s most upmarket stores. The area also has art galleries, theatres and concert venues.
