Greenwich Village is the heart of New York City’s gay scene, often referred to by locals as simply “The Village”, comprising West Village, East Village, Hell’s Kitchen & Chelsea. It is on the west side of Lower Manhattan.

The Stonewall riots, which occured on June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn, 53 Christopher Street were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours. They are considered by most, to constitute the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights.
On June 24, 2016, the Stonewall National Monument (Stonewall Inn) was named the first U.S. National Monument dedicated to the LGBTQ-rights movement.
